CARBON TOWER
A majestic and solitary square-shaped tower in the middle of the marshes with a haughty silhouette reminiscent of the Middle Ages.
With its massive silhouette in the middle of the marshes, the Tour Carbonnière seems to have emerged from a dream of medieval history. Isolated and tranquil, it evokes a much more turbulent era: built in the 13th century, it was the guardian of the royal city of Aigues-Mortes. Although archives remain unclear as to the exact date of its erection, we do know that it had a dual function: as a strategic checkpoint on the only land access route to Aigues-Mortes, and as a compulsory tollgate for all those who travelled there. Merchants, travelers, pilgrims and soldiers had to pass through and pay. Its position was therefore essential: set on an ancient branch of the Vistre river, it not only screened entrances, but also alerted the town in the event of danger. A garrison resided there, supported by four artillery pieces. Renovated some ten years ago, the tower is now open to the public. From the top of the terrace, you can enjoy a remarkable panorama: shimmering ponds, reed beds, bull and horse pastures - a typically Camargue landscape as far as the eye can see. To extend the experience, a 12 km trail leads from Saint-Laurent-d'Aigouze to the tower, either on foot or by bike. You can cross the marshes at sunrise or sunset, when the low-angled light gives the landscape a golden glow. Less crowded than Aigues-Mortes, but also wilder, the Tour Carbonnière offers a calm and authentic interlude, far from the crowds but at the heart of the history and nature of the Camargue.
