Saint-Gilles, an ancient Greek port city named Héraclé, experienced a real boom when a canal was dug to link the port of Sète to the Rhône, the most important port in the region until the construction of Aigues-Mortes. The centuries that followed were punctuated by numerous construction projects. One of the most recent major changes was the conversion of the quay into a marina in 1985. A change illustrated by the installation of numerous facilities.
