Museum preserving a rich collection testifying to the life of Nîmes since the early Middle Ages, installed in the former episcopal palace.

Housed in the former episcopal palace, the Musée du Vieux Nîmes retraces local daily life from the High Middle Ages onwards, with nearly 30,000 exhibits. The thematic tour features decorative arts, typical Nîmes and Cévennes furniture, regional pottery and rich ^18th-century textile collections. An entire room is dedicated to the famous toile de Nîmes, blue dyeing and the origins of denim. This sensitive, well-documented museum elegantly combines Nîmes' heritage, know-how and identity.

Museum of Old nimes but with some weird contemporary pieces?
My personal fave bits were the demin loom and original denim garments.
Staff friendly and helpful.
Worth a visit especially when it is included with the exceptional value Nimes Pass (purchase this online)

Superbe musée ! L’exposition éphémère Pierre Soulages et Jeanne Vicerial est très intéressante. Quant à la permanente, quel plaisir de découvrir l’histoire de Nîmes à travers les tableaux situés à l’entrée du Musée. Du mobilier de différentes époques vient compléter cet incontournable lieu. Merci à la dame aux cheveux courts qui nous a raconté l’histoire des armoires de mariages :)

I absolutely ADORED how the museum integrated the fixed collection with the temporary works of the week of contemporary art in Nimes. Super creative work and overall amazing museum experience!
