A museum where the historical experience is fun and interactive, a rich visit that can be repeated several times.
Located opposite the Arènes, the Musée de la Romanité showcases Nîmes' rich archaeological collections through 65 multimedia displays (augmented reality, videos, interactive models). From the atrium, the remains of a monumental pediment recall the city's origins. A double-revolving staircase takes visitors from Gallic times to everyday Roman life, then to the Middle Ages and on to the present day, revealing the persistence of Romanity through time. It's an experience you'll want to return to again and again.
Designed by architect Elizabeth de Portzamparc, this fluid museum also houses a Mediterranean garden, a restaurant and a roof terrace with a 360° view of the city. Born of the discovery of two remarkable mosaics - Achilles and Pentheus - during excavations on the Allées Jaurès, the project led by mayor Jean-Paul Fournier aimed to provide a new showcase for Nîmes' ancient treasures, previously housed in the old archaeological museum.
The experience is designed to be fun and inclusive: booklets, children's videoguides, a tactile tour, sign language and FALC devices enable all visitors, including those with disabilities, to enjoy the visit to the full. The archaeological garden extends the outdoor exploration, and the terrace invites visitors to get a bird's eye view of history. A living museum, rooted in the city and open to all.
