AUGUST DOOR
The Porte Auguste was the main entrance to the town on the Via Domitiana, coming from Beaucaire
The Porte Auguste, also known as the Porte d'Arles, marks the main entrance to Nîmes on the via Domitia, the road linking Beaucaire to Spain. Built under the Emperor Augustus, it was part of the longest Roman wall in Gaul, ensuring security and control of passageways. Although the site is closed to the public, it can be admired through its ancient gates. After the theft of the statue of Augustus in the 1930s, a replica was installed. The original plinth, however, bears witness to the gate's historic past.
