CASTELLUM DIVISORIUM
The only monument of its kind in the world, it symbolizes the luxury of Roman water supply installations.
A masterpiece of Roman engineering, the Castellum divisorium marks the arrival of water in Nîmes from the Eure spring in Uzès, via the Pont du Gard. Built in Roman times and discovered in 1844, this circular basin cut into the rock (5.50 m in diameter) was used to distribute water throughout the city. It is the only known example of this type of reservoir still visible today. Nestled between Fort Vauban and Rue de la Lampèze, this discreet vestige bears witness to the refinement of Roman infrastructures and their mastery of hydraulics.
