NOTRE DAME AND SAINT-CASTOR CATHEDRAL
Nîmes' first cathedral, with Romanesque frieze, organ, Gallo-Roman sarcophagi and master paintings.
Consecrated in 1096 by Pope Urban II, this cathedral stands on the remains of a Merovingian church. Built by Raimond de Saint-Gilles, it was ravaged during the Wars of Religion, then rebuilt in 1646 thanks to a tax shared by Catholics and Protestants. Its Romanesque frieze is reminiscent of that of the Maison Carrée. The building houses a 17th-century organ, several master paintings and Gallo-Roman sarcophagi, bearing witness to the town's diverse history.
