Perched on its rocky spur, the Château de Beaucaire is a formidable medieval fortress that's a must-see. Overlooking the Rhône and the town, its remains underline the scale of the site and its defensive character. Built in 1180 by the Counts of Toulouse, it underwent a terrible siege during the Crusades against the Cathars. A self-guided tour takes in the Romanesque chapel, the parapet walk and the gardens, while a guided tour gives access to the keep.
