For the past 30 years, the Pierre-André Benoit Museum-Library has presented exhibitions focusing on graphic arts, books, poetry and the artists in its collection: Braque, Picasso, Miró, Picabia... The great names of modern art are represented in painting, engraving and sculpture. In 1989, Pierre-André Benoit (PAB), printer, poet, sculptor and draughtsman, donated his collection of modern artworks, his publishing archives and his literary collections to his native Alès. Part of his residence has been reproduced, and the second floor of the museum has been designed on the model of his personal library, an intimate space with an artistic vision of its own. One of the attractions of the collection is its small format, "les minuscules", but there are also complete editions of his artist's books, nearly 800 copies. Dada master Tristan Tzara, André Breton, Paul Eluard and René Char all worked with him on publications with little text and many engravings, in very limited editions, of which a regularly renewed selection is on display.
Temporary exhibitions complete the offer. For the most part, they concern artists who were collaborators and friends of PAB, often already present in the permanent collection, but for whom a more elaborate showcase is offered. Prints and drawings also feature prominently. The collection continues to grow thanks to donations, such as L'Orphée à la lyre, a lithograph by Jean Cocteau.
