Benedictine abbey with superb sculptures, a treasure trove of Romanesque art, an exceptional site and a must-see monument in the Aude region
An exceptional site, Saint-Papoul is a treasure trove of mixed architectures! Take a very square Romanesque base, add pointed arches for the Gothic, and sprinkle in a few bricks for the originality of the Southern Gothic. And voila! You've got a beautiful blend of styles, a testament to the history of Saint Papoul! And we haven't even told you about the church: here and there you'll find marble details (notably incarnat), and its choir is Baroque in style. The cloister leads to contemplation and calm as you walk through the ambulatory. The abbey also bears witness to the passage of the Master of Cabestany, a famous itinerant artist of the late 12th century, whose superb sculptures can be found here. A true marvel, we are telling you! For all these reasons, the Benedictine abbey (whose first written mention dates back to the 9th century) was listed as a Monument Historique in 1840. In terms of annual programming, the abbey organises events not to be missed under any circumstances. La cattedrale di Saint-Papoul è una chiesa cattolica situata nel villaggio di Saint-Papoul, nel dipartimento dell'Aude in Occitania. L'abbazia fu fondata nell'VIII secolo. Il suo nome deriva da San Papoul, un eremita del V o VI secolo.
Nel 1317, papa Giovanni XXII creò il vescovado di Saint-Papoul e la chiesa abbaziale divenne la cattedrale.
L'abbazia di Saint-Papoul è organizzata attorno a un chiostro gotico costruito tra la fine del XIII secolo e l'inizio del XIV secolo.
Il chiostro è composto da archi a tutto sesto che ricadono tramite un unico abaco rettangolare su doppi capitelli sostenuti da colonne binate, realizzate prevalentemente in mattoni ottagonali, sovrapposti e rivestiti o meno. Il repertorio dei capitelli è di tipo vegetale (fogliame) o animale ( grifoni , mostri). Le scene storiche sono raggruppate contro i pilastri ( Adorazione dei Magi , Erode e forse il martirio di San Papoul).
A nord del chiostro si trova la chiesa abbaziale, in gran parte romanica (XII secolo).
All'esterno, l'abside romanica presenta un tetto originale in lastre di pietra tagliate a "squame di pesce". La cattedrale è famosa per alcune sculture del maestro di Cabestany, tra cui il bellissimo capitello, posto all'esterno dell'abside romanica, che possiamo identificare in "Daniele nella fossa dei Leoni". L'attribuzione al maestro è semplice poiché questa non è l'unica volta che il Maestro ha trattato il tema di Daniele nella fossa dei Leoni in quanto lo stesso tema iconografico è presente nello straordinario capitello di Sant'Antimo, nel comune di Montalcino in provincia di Siena.
