Lagrasse, Termes and Villerouge-Termenès

Exceptional sites

These three sites have an individual history of greatness and tragedy.

Lagrasse will tell you the legend of Philomena or how Charlemagne would have founded the abbey.

Termesis marked by the strong personality of Olivier de Termes, a resistant "faydit" of the Cathar cause, then a knight in the Holy Land.

Finally, Villerouge-Termenès, the castle residence of the archbishops of Narbonne, is marked by the tragic story of Guilhem Belibaste, the last representative of the Cathar church, who was burned alive in the courtyard of the castle in 1321.

European Heritage Days, 17-18 September

Go to Termes where you can access the castle. Don't forget to enjoy the video, the permanent historical exhibition, and ask for the loan of the notebook! Above all, bring your tablets and smartphones to install the "Terms in Cathar Country" application (android and IOS)

In Villerouge-Termenès, enjoy the free visit all day and 3:30 pm, the guided tour of the church and its exceptional 16th century altarpiece

In Lagrasse, you have to stop for a moment. In this "Most beautiful village in France", history and heritage are omnipresent. Lagrasse Abbey will welcome all visitors curious about its religious heritage with a choice of open and commented visits.

On boulevard de la Promenade, the Caveau Musée le 1900 is a place for sensory discovery of Lagrasse's heritage and local products. The visit of the museum of the old Lagrasse and the 3D animations, always ends with a tasting of vinegars and olive oil.

Finally, in the heart of the village, La Maison du Patrimoine, located in the former presbytery, hosts an exhibition on the village's remarkable painted ceilings.

Hiking Freedom of sport on the GR 36 over 2 days

For a weekend, discover the Corbières massif, between Lagrasse and Termes.

Take advantage of the mild temperatures and autumn colours to follow the white and red markings of the GR36. The route allows you to discover an infinite palette of landscapes, magnificent panoramas, a wild and preserved nature, a flora of exceptional richness.

You will cross the villages of character of Lagrasse, Termes and Villerouge-Termenès; each one carrying a particular history... Lagrasse, abbey founded by Charlemagne, former bastion of Cathar resistance and Villerouge, where the last Perfect, Guilhem Bélibaste, was burned.

: 6h walking on the first day, 8h walking on the second day ñ and 930 m difference in altitude per stage.The time indicated does not include breaks and stops.

Hiking difficult to do in July and August due to the high temperatures.

Sentier en Fête

Three hikes are scheduled in September. Following the guide, you will discover all the richness of the flora, fauna and geological heritage of this mountainous massif unlike any other. Three dates to remember:

On September 10, in Laroque-de-Fa, for a night walk (from 5pm to 10.30pm) accompanied by Amandine Bru entitled "Discovering Bordegrande in the rich Sou valley" to understand the landscapes and the links between livestock farmers and biodiversity.

On September 17 in Lagrasse, departure with Patrick Valette for the signal of the Alaric, for a guided walk from 9am to 12pm, how the plant began the reconquest of the mineral, walking on the slopes of the mythical mountain of the Alaric.

On September 25 in Lagrasse,"Roc, géo et Biodiversité", a guided stroll with Catie Lépagnole and Daniel Vizcaïno, to understand, through the observation of the landscapes, the geological phenomena of folding (from 14h to 17h).
