MUSÉE DE L’INQUISITION
Museum showing scenes of torture recreated with mannequins in period costumes
History buffs and the more inquisitive visitor alike will be intrigued by this singular museum, spread over two buildings - one of which dates back to the 17th century - in the heart of the medieval Cité. Nicknamed the "Museum of Torture" to better illustrate its contents, it is not recommended for the squeamish.
The tour plunges you into the dark world of the Inquisition, with a representation of the instruments of torture used from the 12th century to the French Revolution. Scenes of torture are recreated with the help of mannequins in period costumes, offering a vivid insight into these appalling practices. You'll discover a torture room, a prisoner's cell, engravings, animations and various instruments used to subdue heretics, in a context linked to the history of Catharism.
These devices are staged for an immersive experience, in a narrative journey based on historical facts, tracing the victims' journey from arrest to the stake.
The tour is not suitable for young children, except perhaps to admire the illuminated models of the main castles of the Cathar region on the second floor.
You can choose between a self-guided tour - with numerous explanatory panels - or a guided tour. If you take the time to read the contents, allow between 40 minutes and an hour. Information is available in French, English, Spanish, Italian and German, and videos enhance the discovery.
