Construction of the basilica, a true Romanesque-Gothic masterpiece, began at the end of the 11th century. Pope Urban II passed through Carcassonne, and blessed the first stone of the edifice in June 1096. Construction was not completed until the mid-14th century, after the Romanesque choir had been rebuilt in Gothic style. Today, the nave is the oldest part of the church. Its Romanesque semi-circular vault contrasts with the Gothic chevet and transept, illuminated by 13th century stained-glass windows.
