CHÂTEAU HAUT-BERGERON

Winery

Owned by the Lamothe family since 1730, Château Haut-Bergeron, with its 168 awards, is one of the most decorated in the Sauternes appellation. Produced from a hundred or so small plots spread over the entire appellation area (26 hectares of old vines, some of which were grafted in 1903), the harvest is finishing its ageing process in oak barrels in three cellars, which, for example, did not see the 1993 vintage, deemed not worthy enough for bottling. Other older vintages are still available.

CHÂTEAU DE MALLE

Winery

A superb Italian-style residence classified as a Historic Monument, Château de Malle was as much worth a visit for its wines as for its architecture. Second growth classified in 1855, it has been inhabited by the same family since its construction in the 17th century by Jacques de Malle. It was largely embellished by the Count of Lur-Saluces who entered the family by marrying Jeanne de Malle in 1702. The facades of the pavilion still bear his coat of arms. The property has 50 ha of vines in three communes, which is rather rare in the region. This particularity allows the château to produce great wines: château de Malle (a Sauternes grand cru classé in 1855), les Fleurs de Malle (Sauternes), M de Malle (a dry white Graves) and château Pessan (a red Graves). Built in a U-shape, the castle has a central pavilion revealing a remarkable interior, where a unique collection of life-size painted silhouettes also sits enthroned. At the end of the building's wings are two round towers topped with slate domes in the imperial style. One of the two houses the chapel and paintings depicting the life of the Virgin. From the outside, the ensemble is further enhanced by the beautiful Italian gardens. Alas now, the Château de Malle is closed to the public.
