What makes Provins so special is its double underground system
Provins is unique in that it has two underground passages. Each major building in the citadel extends underground, with a quarry, a lower room and a crypt linked to the others by underground passages. This second city - more than a hundred rooms in the Ville Haute and several dozen in the Ville Basse - was created from quarries used to extract the "terre à foulon" (fuller's earth) used to degrease and clean the high-quality woollen cloth produced in Provins.
