Petit Futé's opinion on FAIENCE MUSEUM
Born in Montereau in the middle of the th century, the tradition of earthenware is first-hand craft before becoming industrial. The year 1955 marks a turning point with the closure of the fine earthenware factory founded in 1745. Partly thanks to this, the museum dedicated to this real art opens its doors in 1985. The fonds consists of some 2 400 tiles kept on its reserves and 400 pieces are exposed to the public, illustrating the great hours of the Gien factory, then associated to Creil, between the th and th centuries, including collections of original plates, sometimes full of humour, illustrating the scenes of everyday life, the great moments of the History of France or even fables or proverbs. A way of dedicating the creators, but also honouring the famous "Gray gueules" of clay mines, versus the black gueules of the coal mines, without whom this art would not have been born. The clay in the region is thus highlighted. Please note that the Paul Quesvers Hall offers a Permanent Exhibition on the Famous Battle of 18 February 1814 in Montereau, during which Napoleon I beat the Austrians.
