This town has always benefited from its location at the confluence of the Yonne and Seine rivers. Built in the 6th century where the Yonne meets the Seine, a small monastery dedicated to Saint Martin gave the town its name. Montereau is famous for its earthenware and sand deposits. The presence of stone and clay encouraged the creation of potteries, tile factories, brickworks, kilns and factories. This activity disappeared in the 1950s, but the collections of the Musée de la Faïence, now closed, keep the memory alive. The lower part of Montereau remains unspoilt, with pedestrian streets lined with old timber-framed houses.
