American monument by sculptor Frederick William MacMonnies, located in Meaux, France, donated to France by the United States.
The American Monument by sculptor Frederick William MacMonnies (1863 - 1937) is located next to the Musée de la Grande Guerre du pays de Meaux (you can park at the museum and walk there easily). Donated to France by the United States, it marks the spot where the German offensive was halted during the Battle of the Marne in September 1914. The 26-meter-high monument, inaugurated in 1932, has been named La Liberté éplorée. It features a standing nude woman carrying the body of her fallen son on her right leg.
