A charming museum featuring numerous reconstructed scenes of everyday French life, including witchcraft objects
Just ten kilometers south of Provins, this unique museum is largely the work of Countess Viviane de Witt, the first female auctioneer in Paris and a passionate collector of folk objects. Visitors are immersed in French daily life from 1800 to 1950 through 103 striking, life-size reconstructions! In 2024, the museum added two new miniature scenes. Every detail has been meticulously designed to evoke the daily life of the past, through a host of objects, many of them completely forgotten... From twentieth-century wood-fired kitchens to cheese presses, cutlery workshops, barber stores and period carriages and automobiles, each scene bears witness to spectacular changes in lifestyle. Young and old alike will be fascinated by the authenticity of the collections, including some astonishing witchcraft objects. The experience is so immersive that you can spend hours there - two at least! To prolong the journey back in time, the Chez Grand'Mère restaurant, located next to the museum, offers traditional cuisine with the flavours of yesteryear. In a retro decor with flowery paving, Vichy tablecloths and Thonet chairs, you can savour home-made dishes such as gizzard salad, Royans ravioli with white wine sauce, sea bass fillet on a bed of leeks or rib-eye steak with pepper sauce and golden French fries. A true return to the flavors of yesteryear in a timeless setting...
