Column erected by order of King Louis-Philippe in memory of the dead of the Trois Glorieuses of July 1830 in Paris
Everyone knows the winged Genius of the Bastille, standing on one foot with a torch in his hand (a gilded bronze sculpture by Auguste Dumont), but we generally know very little about the column he surmounts. The July Column is so called because it was built on the orders of King Louis-Philippe in memory of the dead of the Three Glorious Days of July 1830, revolutionary days which, paradoxically, restored the monarchy, known as the July Monarchy, and brought him to power. Today, this 50 m high building is one of the main landmarks of the capital.
