A feudal-style tower, a little-known curiosity in the capital and a vestige of the Hôtel de Bourgogne in Paris, the Tour Jean Sans Fright

This feudal-looking tower, at the foot of which stands the courtyard of a school, is a little-known curiosity in the capital. It is a vestige of the Hôtel des Ducs de Bourgogne, which was built against Philippe Auguste's enceinte. It owes its origins to Duke Jean I of Burgundy, who in the 15th century sought protection from the supporters of his cousin Louis d'Orléans, the brother of the King of France, whom he had just had assassinated... The tour includes a spiral staircase topped by a vaulted ceiling with magnificent carved plant decoration, leading to the bedrooms.

The Tour Jean-sans-peur is a great little museum inside of a medieval tour. Originally part of a much larger home, the tower remains and is in wonderful condition. The stone work and staircase are really interesting and woodworking details are also visible. Several medieval costumes are one display as well as details of life in the period.

A faire.
