Nearly 900 treasures (manuscripts, coins, maps and plans, prints, costumes...) from the collections of the kings of France in a remarkable museum in the heart of Paris, a reading room housed in the splendid oval gallery, a research library and a garden: such is the Richelieu site of what is commonly known as the BNF. A must-see is the Mazarin gallery, built by François Mansart and featuring ceilings painted by Romanelli.

On m’a dit au contrôle de sécurité que les objets en métal précieux étaient interdits, et à la réception, on m’a répondu qu’ils ne pouvaient pas les garder. Je suis venu en France en faisant des dizaines d’heures de trajet uniquement pour visiter cet endroit, et on m’a pourtant refusé l’entrée.
