OPÉRA-COMIQUE
The Opéra-Comique, founded under Louis XIV, is one of the oldest institutions of its kind. In 2005, it became one of 6 national theaters, and in 2015, it celebrates its 300th anniversary! In 1783, the first Opéra-Comique was born, mixing opera, ritornello and farce. Ruined twice, it was the third venue, opened in 1898, that contributed to the fame of works such as Bizet's Carmen . Since the end of 2021, conductor Louis Langrée has been at the helm, with a program in keeping with the "Favart spirit", combining classical and new works.

Nestled in a small square away from the hustle and bustle of Boulevard des Italiens, the Opéra-Comique is one of Paris's best-kept secrets. Created under the reign of Louis XIV, it is one of France's oldest theatrical and musical institutions, alongside the Opéra de Paris and the Comédie-Française. In 2005, it became one of 6 national theaters, and in 2015, it celebrates its... 300 years!
The location is symbolic: it's here that internationally acclaimed works such as Berlioz's La Damnation de Faust, Delibes's Lakmé, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande, Ravel's L'Heure espagnole... but above all Bizet's Carmen and Massenet's Manon were created. Statues of these two rebellious heroines still welcome spectators in the theater's great hall.
Did you know?
Comic opera is a specific type of musical performance. "Comic" does not mean that laughter is obligatory or even frequent.... but that sung arias are mixed with spoken theater. Comic opera thus differs from opera, which is entirely sung, and is ina way the ancestor of musical comedy!
