PLACE DU CHÂTELET
The Place du Châtelet is an important crossroads of the right bank of the Seine river. It occupies a location on the edge of the wharf at which a fortress was built under the First Empire. A column honouring Napoleon I throne in its middle, and at its summit, we can find a Victory in bronze. The superb Fontaine du Palmier, decorated with four sphinx, accompanies the work. On both sides of the square there are two theaters built at the end of the 19th century on the plans of the architect Gabriel Davioud: the Théâtre du Châtelet and the Théâtre de la Ville. These almost twins are part of the capital's best performing rooms. From the Place du Châtelet, we have access to the south to the Île de la Cité, through the bridge Pont au Change and enjoy the beautiful view on the Conciergerie. To the north is the boulevard of Sebastopol, one of the main axes perched by Haussmann under the second Empire. At the end of the square, in the northeast, we discover a square where the Tour Saint-Jacques is located.
