A superb church with many paintings, sculptures, frescoes and tombs, a monument to discover in Paris.

The foundation stone for this edifice was laid by Louis XIV in 1653, and it took almost a century to complete the work. Built to a design by Jacques Le Mercier, the church was inspired by Notre-Dame Cathedral. The building has been fitted with chapels that follow on from the nave and choir. The chapel dedicated to the Virgin, designed by Jules Hardouin Mansart, features a dome superbly decorated in the Baroque style. The church is home to numerous paintings, sculptures, frescoes and tombs. Much of its heritage comes from churches that disappeared during the French Revolution. Note that at the foot of its beautiful columned facade and small staircase, street battles took place between royalists and republican forces on 13 Vendémiaire An IV, October 5 1795. The latter were led by a certain Napoleon Bonaparte, who did not hesitate to fire cannons at the insurgents.

A hidden gem in the middle of Paris. Despite being so unkept and badly maintained you can still enjoy the historical and magnificent art that draws you closer to our Lord. It’s sad to see it’s deterioration. However, it’s true beauty still comes across and forces you to imagine of what once was.
