Dr Martens is the timeless shoe that comes straight from England. It all started in 1901, with the Griggs family, famous for the boots they manufacture in the small town of Wollaston, in the centre of the country. The family business plays a key role in the English shoe industry and in 60 years, the Griggs work boots have built a strong reputation for their robustness and reliability. It was in Munich, during the post-war period that Dr Klaus Maertens, recovering from a broken foot, had the idea of creating a specific sole with an air cushion to better recover. Equipped with an old form of shoemaker and a needle, Maertens manufactures a prototype. In 1947, he and his partner began production on a larger scale. It is at this time that the Griggs family, very interested in this revolutionary system, buys the exclusive rights of this air-cushioned sole.
