A simple defensive moat in the ^14th century, the harbour only became a dock in the ^16th century. In the ^18th century, a development plan decided to build a canal between the Ourcq river and the Seine. Around 1825, the Canal Saint-Martin was built to link the Bassin de la Villette with the Seine at the Arsenal, reducing the distance between the Quai Henri-IV and Ile Saint-Denis and bringing drinking water to the city. Later, barge traffic turned it into a commercial port, which was transformed into a marina in 1983, and whose gardens are well worth a visit!

This nautical stop of 24 secure locations can accommodate boats under 15 m. Boaters benefit from mooring docks accessible to persons with reduced mobility, electric power terminals and water terminals, waste water and sanitation terminals. A floating harbour provides boat rental without a permit during summer. The nautical stop of La Villette is close to the Cité des sciences et de l'industrie, the Cité de la musique, the park of La Villette.
