Rougemont National Necropolis honors 2,169 soldiers of the French First Army who fell in the Vosges in 1944. Created between 1951 and 1958, it brings together bodies exhumed from various temporary cemeteries. Military leaders are also buried here. The fierce fighting in the Vosges and at Belfort was marked by the stubborn defense of the Germans. Despite losses and logistical challenges, the French troops showed courage.
