The Association d 'Astronomie de Franche-Comté is based in the park of the observatory of Besançon, west of the city center. It organizes public evenings every month, with priority to observing the sky when the weather is good. In case of bad weather, conferences are planned. The main telescope building originally housed a "couched equatorial", the observatory's largest telescope, built between 1884 and 1888, and used from 1890 until the late 1960 s to observe particular types of stars and comets. Today, this building includes a dome, a meeting room, and a mini planetarium. The sky from Besançon is not ideal for discovering celestial objects of low luminosity (stars, nebulae, galaxies), the objects observed during these public evenings more readily correspond to light objects, Moon and planets in particular. Of course, the Jean-Marc Becker Observatory also collaborates with major national events related to astronomy, the Day of Science, Night Day, or Star Nights, for which its members offer day observation sessions (Sun) or night according to programs.
