THE GLACIER
A masonry structure dating from 1873, built at the instigation of the Prince de Joinville in Arc-en-Barrois
This masonry structure was built in 1873 at the instigation of the Prince de Joinville, who lived in the château at the time. The icehouse is named after its original function. To preserve perishable goods in the 19thcentury , a solution had to be found to keep the château's foodstuffs safe, particularly game from the hunt. This 20m3 cooler met the imperative need to keep food fresh. Access is via a 13 m long corridor, interspersed with insulation doors. It's unusual!
