Guided tour to discover the abbey where Saint Bernard lived, one of the best kept in France.

It was Saint Bernard who came to Clairvaux to build the famous abbey nine centuries ago, where he lived until his death in 1153. Today, very long walls, in successive rows, forbid any view on the vestiges of these former splendors. Clairvaux is one of the best guarded centers in France. However, the Ministry of Culture has taken over the space of the main historical buildings, which are accessible to visitors during guided tours.

Je n ai pas apprécié de me faire refoulée sous prétexte de visites uniquement guides- encore faut il le aa savoir quand on est touristes de passage

Une visite guidée à ne pas louper ! C’est un lieu extraordinaire, chargé d’histoire jusqu’à nos jours (les derniers détenus en sont partis en mai 2023 !). Une excellente guide, passionnée, qui adapte son discours à tous les âges. Un grand merci à cette jeune femme de nous avoir découvrir cette abbaye-prison ! On espère que ce lieu restera ouvert aux visites pendant très très longtemps malgré les prochains aménagements à venir.

Het klooster is er niet meer. Na de Franse Revolutie werd het gebouwencomplex een gevangenis, bizar. Het gebouw van de novicen is geheel gerestaureerd en verwijst nog het meest naar het klooster van toen. Een rondleiding is een must.
