Commanderie d'Avalleur, a Templar jewel bearing witness to the history of Bar-sur-Seine.
Situated on a plateau overlooking Bar-sur-Seine, the Avalleur commandery was founded around 1167 by the Order of the Temple. It became one of the richest in Champagne, owning nearly 700 hectares of land and forests. Abolished in 1312, it passed to the Hospitallers and then became a farm after the French Revolution. Today, it retains its intact XIIIᵉ century Templar chapel, listed as a historic monument since 1921, as well as an original main building. In fine weather, the site is open to the public for self-guided or guided tours and summer events.
