FRANÇOIS 1ER'S BEARD
Visit a remarkable building, a former hotel in Romorantin-Lanthenay.
On Rue du Milieu in Romorantin, you'll find a beautiful brick and stone house decorated with green glazed brick lozenges, the former Hôtel Saint-Pol or Maison de François1er. It's also the setting for a famous story: during the King's Day celebrations of 1521, François I simulated an attack on the hotel where the king designated by the bean was seated. The game went awry, and the real king was hit by a firebrand (or log, depending on the variant) thrown from a window. It was at this point that the king decided to wear a beard to hide the scar caused by his wound.
