Castle surrounded by a park and bordered by the Loire River, its collections retrace the era of the good King Henry, a program to choose from.
The first construction of this château dates back to the High Middle Ages. At the very end of the 14th century, Guy de La Trémoïlle had a vast keep built, surrounded by four circular towers. The château was subsequently remodeled and embellished by Maximilien de Béthune, Duc de Sully, Henri IV's minister, who acquired it in 1602. A replica of the tomb of Sully and his second wife, Rachel de Cochefilet, can be found on the first floor of the keep. Sully mainly retired to this château after the assassination of Henri IV. He wrote and printed his memoirs here. The collections (furniture, paintings, engravings, decorative arts) provide an insight into the era of "good King Henri", whose memory remains attached to this château. The Psyché tapestry, presented in the rooms refurbished in 2007, is an ensemble of six 17th-century tapestries telling the story of this goddess whose beauty surpassed that of Venus. On the second floor, you'll be enchanted by the parapet walk (the horizon extends for ten kilometers or so) and the imposing frame with its period beams. Illuminated at night, the château, owned by the Loiret departmental council, is surrounded by parkland and bordered by the Loire River. In terms of programming, the château comes alive every year with a series of not-to-be-missed events. And, in the meantime, you can take advantage of new features such as visits to unusual parts of the château with "Enquête au château", lantern tours, escape games or dramatized tours for groups.
