THE BRIARE CANAL
The Nautiques Canal makes a lot of the charm of Montargis. The ballet of the boats taking it and passing the locks in the city, is the subject of entertainment number 1 for children on the way to the water. Built in the th century, this art book called for a very bold technique for the time. She inspired Pierre-Paul Riquet for his canal du Midi. And yet the name of Hugues Cosnier, a hydraulic engineer to which we owe the Nautiques canal, has sunk into oblivion… At the height of the Girodet museum, at the corner of Loing Street and Boulevard Durzy, you will notice a relatively high point of Latin inscriptions: it was once the terminus of the Nautiques Canal. It was then extended to Chalette where it joins the Orleans Canal to become the Loing Canal, in the place of the Three canals.
