Maó's main theater - colloquially called "el Principal" by the locals - is one of the island's most important references in terms of culture, and more specifically live performance. The building itself is particularly remarkable, both inside and out. The programming is also of the highest quality, ranging from opera and classical music performances to more modern music concerts. The most prestigious theatre in Mallorca. A true marvel, housed in a 19th-century building. Inaugurated in 1667, it was originally known as the Casa de las Comedias. The current theatre was designed by Mallorcan architect Antoni Sureda i Villalonga and decorated by French set designer Félix Cagé (who also worked at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona). With a rich and varied programme, the municipal theatre hosts opera, theatre, circus, dance and music productions.
