It is the Greek national holiday, commemorating the beginning of the war of independence against the Ottoman Empire. It is a public holiday.
It commemorates the start of the war of independence against the Ottoman Empire, symbolically launched on March 25, 1821. It's a public holiday and an opportunity to celebrate the three pillars of "national glory": the army, the school and the church. In the Dodecanese islands, always suspicious or even hostile towards Turkey, it's often the occasion for unhappy nationalist speeches. It's a solemn, patriotic occasion, with parades of students and schoolchildren in traditional costumes, as well as military personnel.
