The Dormition is celebrated all over the country, with particular enthusiasm in the churches and monasteries dedicated to the Virgin.
For the Orthodox, the Dormition of the Virgin celebrates what Catholics call the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It's one of the most important feasts in the religious calendar, but also in the secular calendar, since August 15 marks the start of the Greek summer vacations. Each island promises its own festivities, with great panigyria (feasts, music, traditional dances) organized wherever a church or monastery is dedicated to the Virgin, which is pretty much everywhere. All families come together for this great celebration.
