The Dormition of the Virgin celebrates, among the Orthodox, what Catholics call the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. In the Catholic island of Tinos, the feast of the discovery of the Holy Icon of Panagia remains the most important day for the island. The day before, Vespers takes place at the Temple of the Discovery where a miraculous icon was transferred. But every region promises its share of festivities, with large panigyri organized where a church or monastery is dedicated to the Virgin, just about everywhere. All families gather there.
