On the Katheri Deftera (or Pure Monday), the first Monday of Orthodox Lent, children throw kites into the sky.

On that day, the Greeks will celebrate "Kathari Devtera", literally "Pure Monday", marking the first day of Lent in the Orthodox Churches, 40 days before Palm Sunday and 48 days before Easter Sunday. If you look up to the sky, you will certainly be lucky enough to see many kites, especially in Paros, in the Cyclades. Women also sometimes wash the houses with water to remove all dirt. In the villages, some churches and houses are sometimes repainted with lime.
