Founded in 1892, these Russian and Turkish baths belong to a generation of public hygiene places that flourished on the Lower East Side when apartments were devoid of bathrooms. Nothing to do with the hyperactive atmosphere of the health clubs; here, laziness is a must, and everyone can stay as long as they want, while enjoying the facilities: the Finnish sauna, the Turkish bath (sweat room), the gym and, above all, the extraordinary Russian Steam Room, all in cement and equipped with a huge oven.

This new spa on the northern tip of Governors Island is proof that every effort is being made to revitalize this long neglected island. The program includes saunas, steam rooms and massage rooms, all in a decor designed as a tribute to the Big Apple, whose towers can be seen through the windows. The panoramic views of the skyline from the heated outdoor pools contribute to the sense of well-being and exclusivity sought. The spa is currently under development and will soon be extended to the neighboring buildings.
