Undoubtedly the most important Hindu festival of the year. At nightfall, candles are lit in front of all the houses to celebrate Rama's return to his Ayodhya kingdom after his victory over the demon Ravana. Many firecrackers slap in order to drive out demons and evil spirits. Lakshmi, the goddess invoked for fortune, is also celebrated. Merchants start new account books. Everyone wishes each other Shubh Labh or "Good fortune". In West Bengal, the festival is called Kali Puja because it is dedicated to the goddess Kali and not to the goddess Lakshmi as in most parts of the country. Here too, it is the reign of firecrackers.
