GARE DE GYUMRI

Railway station

Long reserved almost exclusively for freight trains, the station east of Gyumri has been back in service since the March 2018 launch of a modern-design electric train to Yerevan. It is not a TGV, since it takes 2 hours to cover the 130 km in one go, but on the scale of Armenia, it is a big step, and at the experimental stage since there are only 4 shuttles on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. While waiting for the other announced trains, there is always the Yerevan-Tbilisi, which connects the capital to Gyumri in more than 3 hours

ARMENIA AIR COMPANY

Airlines

This private Armenian company, created in 2015, together with Armenian Airways and Air Armenia, illustrates the renaissance of Armenian civil aviation after the bankruptcy of several national airlines, including the latest, Armavia. With its still limited fleet of new 737 wide-body Boeing jets, it operates two weekly flights between Yerevan and Lyon on Mondays and Thursdays, as well as charter flights to several Middle Eastern cities, including Tel Aviv, and also to Russia. It also provides freight transport by cargo aircraft.

GARE CENTRALE D’EREVAN

Train

Yerevan's only central railway station, a beautiful Soviet building topped by a spire, is located on Sassountsi Tavit Square (the metro of the same name), recognizable by the equestrian statue of the mythical hero Tavit of Sassoun, by the here very well known Soviet sculptor Yervant Kotchar. It runs idle with a few regional trains to Sevan and an international train to Tbilisi and Batoum, daily in summer. A Russian company is bringing the network up to standard and since 2018 an electric train has been connecting Yerevan to Gyumri in just 2 hours.

GARE ROUTIÈRE DU NORD

Bus and coach

The bus station of the North, or Kanaker, on the road to Sevan, is more readily used, as its name suggests, to get to the north of the country. Short trips, like Sevan (1h30), or a little longer: Dilijan or Alaverdi (3h30), by bus or minibus, marshroutka. The bus station has been redone, and even if we lose some folklore, we gain in comfort. A buffet is therefore planned for waiting passengers, with local specialities. As in the bus station of Kilikia, collective taxis offer their services.

AÉROPORT INTERNATIONAL DE ZVARTNOTS

Airline and services

Yerevan was proud of its fake Soviet airport at Roissy, it is even prouder of the one, which will be refurbished in 2011 by Eurekian, an Argentinean Armenian who rules over airports in Latin America. It is ultramodern, highly functional, international in scope and will carry 1.8 million passengers in 2019, linking Armenia with more and more countries. A shuttle system connects it to the centre of Yerevan, as well as the Aerotaxi company, or buses 108 and 20.

SHIRAK INTERNATIONAL AEROPORT

Airline and services €€

Gumri airport has been refurbished; old equipment, sent to Stproducakert, has been replaced by more modern infrastructure, which now guarantees international connections. A local Taron Avia company has since 2017 provided more or less regular flights between Gyumri, Moscow and Krasnodar in Russia, and has been competed since the Russian low-cost company Pobeda, also providing connections with Russian cities.

CENTRAL BUS STATION

Bus station

Also known as Kilikia Avtokayan, the station serves all destinations in Armenia and beyond (Tbilisi, 6am, Tehran, Athens, at least 55h). Remote Armenian localities in the south, such as Sissian (4 hrs.) and Stepanakert (5.30 hrs.), but also in the north, such as Alaverdi (3.30 hrs.), are served daily by modern buses or the less expensive Marshrutka or Gazelle minibuses, but the collective taxis offered at the bus stations are hardly more expensive. There are stops in Yerevan (Cascade) and the bus station has a buffet.

AUSTRIAN AIRLINES

Airlines

The Austrian airline was one of the first in Europe to include Armenia among its destinations. From Vienna, in the heart of Europe, Yerevan is only 4 hours away, and the competitive fares of this dynamic company and in partnership with other airlines make its stopover flights between France and Armenia attractive. However, since 2020 it has been competing with Wizz Air, a Hungarian low-cost airline, which initially offers twice-weekly flights between Vienna and Vilnius and Yerevan

METRO D'EREVAN

Inaugurated in 1981, it has only one line and 10 stations (11 soon), but three of them, moreover of a Soviet luxury almost comparable to that of Moscow, serve the Kentron, linking the north to the railway station, where it becomes airborne. It is cool in the summer and the oars, every 15 minutes, are comfortable. The Yerevan Card, which gives free access to public transport and museums in the city and elsewhere, can be purchased at the ticket office at the Barékamoutioun station, depending on the formula you have purchased
