Getting around by train Vietnam

The Reunification Express links Hanoi to Hô-Chi-Minh-Ville. Hanoi is also linked by train to other cities in the North and Northeast: Lao Cai, Lang Son... For Haiphong, more frequent departures from Long Bien station. Buy your tickets in advance. A special counter is reserved for foreigners. Staff speak English. Departures for Lao Cai take place on the other side of the main station, on Trân Qui Cap street. Timetables and fares are given on the website.

From Hanoi station to Ninh Binh station, several departures daily. It is highly recommended to buy a return ticket at Hanoi station, as it is sometimes difficult to get a seat on the return train from Ninh Binh. There are also train connections to Dong Hoi, Hue or Danang. Schedules and ticket reservations are available on the website. The bus is an economical means of transportation ideal for travelers with a small budget.

The train of Reunification stops at the Ferroviaire Tri railway Station located approximately ten kilometres north of the city, on the national great 1. Taxis and xe-ôm provide shuttle service between hotels and the train station. A ticket dispenser is available at the station.

This tourist train(tau du lich) has been upgraded to offer improved services: cabins with 2 or 4 berths (compared with 6 in normal trains), sleeping facilities, dedicated staff... Depart Hanoi at 10pm, arriving in Lao Cai at 5.55am. Departure from Lao Cai at 9:30pm for arrival in Hanoi at 5:25am. The website provides a wealth of information, including fares and ticket offices. In this international station, daily trains from and to Hanoi. Travel time: about 5.5 hours. Northbound, the line extends past the Friendship Gate (Huu Nghi Quan) into China's Guangxi province, but the station is not open to international travelers. Dong Dang is the station on the Vietnamese border where the metric track ends and the normal track continues to the large Chinese megalopolis of Nanning.

Trains to Haiphong. Buy tickets 2 hours in advance. The station is located at the Long Bien Bridge (formerly Paul Doumer Bridge) and near the Dong Xuan market. Even if you don't intend to go to Haiphong by train, a detour to the station can be an opportunity for photographers to take some interesting pictures... The Ho Chi Minh City train station is one of the most important in the region. Connections by the Reunification trains with all the coastal towns to the North. Remember to book tickets for berths at least three days before departure! Agencies and cafés can take care of booking tickets, which you can also obtain online. Free wifi is available throughout the station. Shops and restaurants for all budgets on site.

Designed by the architects Moncet and Reveron, who found their inspiration in the minority houses of Tây Nguyên, it is a very beautiful building from the French period of the 1930s. On the ground floor, the waiting room had two parts, one reserved for the natives, the other for the settlers. Today, the station has only a tourist vocation. With a length of 84 km, the rack railway line connects Dà Lat to Thap Cham (Ninh Thuân province). It is the oldest rack railway in the world.

Please note: make sure to book tickets one day in advance and at least three days or much longer for berths. Specify soft sleep (more expensive, but much more comfortable) or hard sleep (without mattress and with reduced space in the compartment). Tickets should preferably be obtained directly from the station ticket office. An old scam consists for the intermediary agencies in selling hard sleep places for soft sleep places...

Several train lines join this station and serve the city of Phan Thiêt. From Hô-Chi-Minh-Ville, daily trains with a departure at 6:40 am. At Hô-Chi-Minh-Ville station, you have to go to the building on the left within the station grounds to take this train. Arrival is less than 4 hours later, at 10:24 am. In the opposite direction, the daily departures from Phan Thiêt take place at 1:10 pm for an arrival at 5:14 pm at HCMV. This line allows you to take the time to travel and enjoy beautiful typical landscapes.
