A melting pot of European climates

Montenegro is bathed by three major types of climate, corresponding roughly to the three main geographical regions of the country. There will therefore be significant variations in each environment and in each season.

The thin coastal strip has a Mediterranean climate, with long dry summers and short mild winters. November is usually the wettest month. The average temperature in January is 9°C, compared to 23-25°C in the summer. The mountains dominate the sea like a wall, so the climatic influences of the Mediterranean are limited to the coast.

Cetinje, a few kilometres from Kotor, as well as the central plain, are thus subject to a continental climate typical of Central Europe. Summers are hotter and winters colder than on the coast. Podgorica, with an average temperature of 22.09°C in the city, is the warmest in the country and one of the warmest in Europe. The months of July and August are particularly "hot" with an average temperature of 34°C.

The high mountains in the north have a mountain climate. Winters are cold, even very cold (average maximum temperature of 2°C in January), and the snow can be up to 5 m deep.

Seasons marked by scattered rains

Another characteristic of the country is the rainfall, which is regular throughout the year and sometimes heavy. But the tourist season in Montenegro can be divided into three. In winter, the abundant snow between January and March allows ski lovers to enjoy the mountain ranges; on the Adriatic coast, mild temperatures allow for beautiful and invigorating walks. In the spring, you will discover the country with pleasure, as very pleasant temperatures, between 15 and 20 degrees, offer you the opportunity to take your first swims as well as walks in the mountains. The only problem is the short but sometimes heavy rains. In summer, Montenegro is faithful to its very hot continental climate. With a minimum water temperature of 21 degrees, it is a paradise for swimmers; in the mountains, the mild climate makes you want to escape. On the other hand, autumn is a period with heavy rain, not very pleasant for tourism.
