At the end of the museum parking lot is a memorial to the many Yugoslav, Russian and Polish prisoners who died here between 1942 and 1945. Northern Norway was a strategic point for the Germans. The many ice-free harbours in the winter allowed them to hide their submarines and other warships. The Nazis built the railway to Bodø at great human cost.

In these harsh lands, especially in winter, there was little need for gas ovens to exterminate prisoners. In Saltdal, there were about fifteen camps with about 30 000 prisoners. The war memorial at the Arctic Circle is very moving, especially when you look at the railway tracks on the other side of the E6. Looking at this desolate landscape, one can only imagine the inhuman conditions under which the prisoners worked. The icy wind coming down from the black mountain opposite, passing by the two big rocks of the Lappish sacrifice at the bottom, is chilling, literally and figuratively.

An impressive number of these war memorials and "blood roads" mark the area. The Nazis practised scorched earth tactics at the end of the war, and almost all the houses in Northern Norway were wiped off the map. The monument is open air and free to visit at any time of the year. A recommended memorial stop.

The small museum exhibits naturalized Arctic animals, including a huge polar bear. On the second floor are some typical northern fishing boats. The hourly slide show of Norway's landscapes and seasons is the same as the free one at the Oslo tourist office. There's also a mailbox for postcards from the Arctic Circle. Souvenir store, cafeteria serving hot dishes and a few northern specialties. The children's menu is half-price, and includes an ice cream.

Qualified and friendly guides offer a variety of options for different levels of experience, from simple hiking to sport trips (climbing, caving, safari, bungee jumping). Some examples: day trip in a canoe, day climbing trip on the Hamarøyskaftet, 6-hour hike to Hovdsundet, a beautiful beach, day ice hike on the Svartisen, or a ride with sled dogs, either as a passenger or with your own sled! Several types of excursions are proposed: The visit of the city centre in summer, the visit to the Trollstigen Maelstrom every day, the discovery of the midnight sun on the Rønvik Hill, 3 km away, for the beautiful view of the mountains that form the Lofoten wall and the islands of Voerøy and Røst. It is essential to book at the tourist office or directly in Bodo Sightseeing.

The building has a modern architecture, is imposing, very spacious and pleasant. The view of the harbour from inside is beautiful. The Stormen houses both the magnificent library and three concert halls of very different styles. If the project was ambitious, it was successfully carried out by the English architects DRDH, known all over the world. Bodø thus places itself more and more on the national and international scene. The Musée de la Marine is housed in a former prison built in 1725. In use until 1835, it was once known as the slave prison. The legendary Gjest Baardson, the Norwegian Robin Hood, was put in irons here. The museum houses a small collection of sailing ships, some beautiful figureheads and navigational instruments. The museum shop offers beautiful illustrated books, games and small items.

This painting gallery adjoins the cathedral. On the steps, the Skrubbefar, a bronze by Dyre Vaa, stands guard. Immediately at the entrance is Karl Uchermann's huge painting (1892) of a moose being devoured by wolves. Further on, we find Peter Balke with his bistre seascapes of the Great North under the storm. Tidemand and Gude, also present, were the great painters of the Norwegian romantic period. The museum café is open daily from 11 am to 8 pm.

It is a wildlife park with Nordic species such as these elks that can be stroked at mealtime. The menagerie also includes brown bears, martens, polecats, sheep from the Stone Age and red foxes with white tails. A small lake with a huge troll (mountain giant) is set up, which allows children to go fishing for real fish in a boat. You can also go horseback riding.

The Stiklestad Cultural Centre, opened in 1992, is designed as a walk through the history of King Olav. Born a pagan and baptized in Rouen, Olav Haraldsson, later called Olav the Saint, was the one who imposed Christianity in Norway by the force of his sword. Impressive re-enactments in an open-air theatre allow tourists to immerse themselves in this period and in particular in the great battle that took place on these now peaceful fields.

Skien Fritidspark is an amusement park that is the pride of the city. The municipality has invested 440 million kroner in its facilities for schools, the local population and tourists. The complex now includes: a winter ice rink, an artificial turf field, tennis courts, a ski hall, a ski ramp, floodlit slopes, a large water complex (6 pools, slides, saunas, whirlpool) and a climbing park with tree climbing. A great activity for the whole family!

Area: 2,105 km². The park and the four adjacent protected areas extend from the Norwegian coast and the Melfjord in the west to the mountain range along the Swedish border, covered by the Svartisen glacier. The Svartisen Glacier is the largest glacier in northern Scandinavia, covering 370 km². The birch forests are home to a surprisingly rich flora for the latitude, and such rare species as the Arctic rhododendron grow on the limestone areas.

The rock engravings found at the Åskollen and Austad sites have been dated to around 6,000-7,000 years ago. They are the first signs of human activity in the Drammen area. The largest rock carving at the site is of a moose. The animals are decorated with lines and figures on the inside of their bodies, which may suggest that this is a representation of their internal organs. Really beautiful to see.

This standing wooden church was completed in 1897. It belongs to the Church of England and is under the spiritual administration of the Bishop of Gibraltar, who is responsible for all Anglican churches on the European continent. It was erected in memory of Margaret Sophie Green Kvikne, daughter of a Yorkshire vicar, who came to Norway as a pioneer climber and married there. She died in 1894, but on her deathbed her husband promised to build an Anglican church. St Olaf' is today one of the 28 wooden churches.

This incomparable viewpoint (one of the most beautiful in the region), located at 407 meters above sea level at the end of Vardevegen, allows to admire the city of Molde, the archipelagos that populate the fjords, and the snow-covered peaks (more than two hundred visible on a clear day) that cover the horizon. Many walkers get there on foot from Molde along the Green Corridor (about an hour's walk one way for good walkers). A place not to be missed, especially for those who travel in winter.

Ergan Kystfort is a restored German fort dating from the Second World War. You can visit the former command centre and technical facilities. Weapons and military equipment are also on display.

Although Møysalen National Park is not directly located in Stokmarknes, it is nearby and worth a visit if you love nature and hiking. The park is dominated by the majestic Møysalen mountain and offers beautiful scenery, well-marked hiking trails for motivated walkers and a rich birdlife. You don't have to walk far to experience the majesty and solitude of the mountain and lakes!

The Trondheim Tramway Museum opened its doors to the public in 1995. What makes this collection so special, beyond its sheer number and diversity, is its completeness. The museum brings together almost all the models that have paraded the city's streets! The trains are fully restored, and some are even functional. The vast majority are open to the public. All in all, a wonderful journey back in time!

Welcome aboard the oldest operational paddlewheel boat in the world! It is one of the major attractions in the region. Since 1856, this magnificent "swan" has been plying the waters of Lake Mjøsa. The sound of the steam that escapes when the boat starts is deafening, but unforgettable! Namdalsmuseet was founded in 1914 and is considered one of Norway's oldest museums. It is dedicated to the preservation and presentation of the region's history, culture and nature. The museum houses a vast collection of objects and artifacts that trace the history of Namdalen. The collections include archaeological objects, traditional costumes, tools and handicrafts, photographs... This open-air museum is also a great place to take a walk and regularly organizes events.

During the summer season, Fjord X offers a variety of themed cruises on the Sogndalsfjord departing from Sogndal. Whether you're a Viking history buff, a cider connoisseur or a fan of sunsets over the water, Fjord X takes you on a voyage of discovery of the many nuggets the fjord has to offer. It's also possible to take the boat in one direction only and return to Sogndal by electric bike. A museum on the theme of the Vikings, with the oldest so-called "long house" in the world as its central attraction, nothing less! Inside this house, activities to help you discover the daily life of the Vikings. But it's outdoors that most of the action takes place between the farm, the blacksmith's shop, the Viking boats, among others. In the summer, a good number of workshops are offered so that you can reveal the Viking in you: archery, axe-throwing, horseback riding, sailing a Viking boat!

It's a great student association that exists since 1927. Housed in this amazing round red house, Samfundet organises events, parties, exhibitions and many other activities. Interesting to get up close and personal with the vibrant youth of Trondheim and the world. Every year they organise UKA, Norway's largest student-run cultural festival and ISFit, one of the largest international student festivals.

Trampe, Trondheim's bicycle elevator, is a curiosity that needs no introduction! Trondheim's cyclists were faced with such a steep incline that they ended up taking matters into their own hands. Created in 1993, Trampe is one of a kind. Free of charge, it enables cyclists to overcome the steep Brubakken climb without breaking a sweat! To use it, nothing could be simpler: place your right foot on the cleat, keep the other foot on the pedal, and press the button!

Welcome to the world's most northerly distillery! Since its opening in 2016, it has been opening its doors to the public for a tour followed by a tasting of its vodka, aquavit, gin and whisky. Inspired by the ancient methods and customs of the Viking Age, among others, this distillery infuses its beverages with the history of the fjord, blended with the latest production technology. There are three types of visit, the most classic lasting 1 hour and including 3 tastings. You can also make a detour to the store to take home a local souvenir!

The fortifications and the Fredriksten Festning fortress, built around 1660 in the shape of a star according to the French model of the time, can be admired here. The fortress contains a collection of exhibits on the city's military history. The castle has been attacked six times, but never conquered. It is a very beautiful place, beautifully preserved. You can go for a walk, have a bite to eat or spend a night there. The view of the city and the fjord is breathtaking. Events are also organized there.

In a restored former caviar cannery, the Kaviar Factory welcomes you to a bright, atypical 650 m² space. You'll also enjoy a beautiful view of the fjord. This private contemporary art gallery was founded by the discerning and passionate collector couple Venke and Rolf Hoff in 2013. Since then, in this exceptional setting, the Kaviar Factory has hosted a temporary exhibition, renewed each year, of avant-garde artists of national and international renown.

This church was erected on the battle site, and its altar is on the very spot where St. Olav fell. St. Olav is immortalized in a statue by the sculptor Dyre Vaa, which depicts him holding his golden cross over the heads of his subjects. Every year, for almost 1,000 years, some 300 enthusiasts have gathered on the battlefields to re-enact the same tragedy on the saint's feast day, June 29. This gigantic theatrical performance attracts more than 20,000 spectators. The choir of the church houses frescoes by Alf Rolfsen (1930).

It stands on a gentle grassy slope leading down to the Nisser fjord. Built of stone (a rarity in Norway) around 1150, it is dedicated to Norway's patron saint, St. Olav. The ceiling is decorated with 20 panels by Thomas Blixius, painted in 1714. The church has preserved its original portal, whose arcade depicts two dragons entwined in a struggle frozen for eternity. The small cemetery that surrounds it exudes a striking atmosphere.

The stone church dates from the Middle Ages. It was built between 1200 and 1220. An unpretentious church that can be visited if you pass by. A magnificent organ, worth a visit, with painted blue wooden contours decorated with motifs was installed in 1825 and restored many times. It is still in use for masses and other celebrations. The church also has its own model ship, a beautiful three-masted wooden ship, all white, quite original!

Rondane National Park is Norway's oldest park, created in 1962 to protect one of the country's most ecologically at-risk areas. The park contains many peaks over 2,000 meters, the highest being Rondslottet at 2,178 meters. Among other things, the park is home to a large reindeer colony. In 2003, the park was extended to cover a total area of 963 ^km2. It's a great place for hiking and wildlife watching. In winter, Nordic and cross-country skiing are favoured.

Bymarka is quite simply the garden of the people of Trondheim. This vast 80 km² coastal natural area is home to a wealth of natural beauty and some 200 km of hiking trails! It's a meeting place for locals in fine weather, but also in winter, when the cross-country ski trails (some of which are illuminated for night-time use) are open. There are several refuges and cafés on the reserve to welcome you for a break. It's easy to get here by public transport, via Sverresborg, Kyvatnet or Lian.

Senja by Heart offers guided tours of the village salmon factory. A rare opportunity to get behind the scenes of Norwegian salmon production in a small, traditional village. Here, modernity and tradition combine to perpetuate this ancestral and lucrative activity. Many of the locals work and make their living from this vital industry. Senja is also a prime destination for fishing enthusiasts, who can join organized outings or hire equipment and a boat.

This immense site is dedicated to contemporary art. A must-see is The Twist, an impressive bridge-gallery towering above the river, in perfect osmosis with its surroundings. Its remarkable form is no less than an architectural feat, designed by the Danish firm BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group, and hosts temporary exhibitions. The sculpture park features some 50 works of art scattered throughout the natural environment, accessible even in the off-season. There are also exhibitions on the theme of industry.

On Route 64 towards Molde (30 km from Åndalsnes), the standing wooden church at Rødven is worth a visit. The building, beautifully situated on the shores of the Rødven Fjord, dates from the 13th century. Inside the church you can see a crucifix that is as old as the church itself. Parking, WC, guided tours daily during the summer season. The whole northern shore of Romsdalsfjord offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.

Visit the new Deichman Library for hours of fun! A magnificent building, inside and out. Each year, an author's work is selected and placed in the bookshop of the future, to be published only 100 years from now! For each manuscript, a tree has been planted in Marka's forest, which will be used to print the future book. Deichman is full of surprises: great spaces for little ones, sound niches, art, serenity, workshops. Super café-resto & wifi.

Located at the end of the world ("Verdens Ende") near the old stone lighthouse, this modern establishment will appeal to young and old alike: guided exploration of the surrounding nature, panoramic restaurant, immersive digital exhibition, souvenir shop with local products, conferences. Behind the building in logs, built in 1654, a stone of 540 kg is that tells you that it was built by Sterke the Nile (Nils Olavson Langedal), the giant of Seljord which had been fed with the mare's milk. The house of Sterke the Nile is located on the hill behind the church.

The church of Flatdal is a langkirke, i.e. a long construction and extended to symbolise the holy path ("Via Sacred") which follows the course of the east to the west.
