Practical information : Going out Costa Rica
Timetable
Costa Rica has a lively nightlife: generally from Thursday to Monday, bars, clubs and discos open their doors and welcome a crowd of night owls eager to party. Most bars and clubs come alive on weekends, but the crowds don't usually leave until 10 or 11pm. Once the party starts, closing times vary widely. However, the country is not as festive as some of its neighbors, and some places close early (around 2am). In San José, the capital, and on the beaches along the coast, the potential for nightlife is greater than inland.
Budget & Tips
In order to access the nightclubs, women will be able to take advantage of advantageous rates or even free.
Night transport
There are no night buses in Costa Rica. In San José and the larger cities, the best way to get around is by cab. On the Pacific and South Caribbean coasts, tuk-tuk (motorized tricycles), known locally as toritos, have become widespread in certain localities (you'll find plenty of them in the Nosara and Puerto Viejo areas), and also operate in the evenings.
What's very local
In Costa Rica, it's customary to have "ladies' nights", a popular practice that guarantees ladies free entry to clubs and free drinks. For an aperitif, there's nothing better than a cocktail at sunset!
Tourist traps
Be careful when returning to the streets of the capital at night: robberies are committed by organized gangs, either by snatching or pickpocketing. As a general rule, don't walk alone at night, in the street, in public parks, in isolated areas or on beaches. In tourist-rich coastal towns and villages, caution is also advised (avoid night-time strolls on the beach, in isolated streets, etc.).
