In Costa Rica, the opening hours are more or less the same as in Europe, with one small difference: shops open earlier and generally close earlier than in France. In general, stores open from 8am to noon and from 2pm to 4pm from Monday to Friday and on Saturday morning. In the big cities, shops stay open continuously from 8am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday. In tourist areas, shops sometimes stay open on Sundays and holidays.
The Costa Rican government has implemented a new program called "Sello Costa Rica Artesanal" which consists of developing the artisanal market and strengthening the Costa Rican identity. This program guarantees to the customer the authenticity of a product really conceived from an artisanal know-how. It values, among other things, a quality raw material, an ethical elaboration and good environmental practices. This program allows us to fight against imported and industrialized products.
Handicrafts are one of the most important activities for the indigenous communities of Costa Rica. The country has known how to value the "know-how" of its population, but many products are still made abroad, especially in China, which makes them less attractive. To find authentic creations, it is best to go directly to the producer, in the villages or markets, in order to avoid the "tourist traps" whose authenticity is not 100% guaranteed.
