Since the beginning of 2015, Costa Rica's electricity has been produced from 100% renewable energy sources. Without using either oil or coal, the country has succeeded in producing energy thanks to large hydraulic reserves, wind and solar power. But while the government relies mainly on hydropower, it also uses geothermal energy because the heat from the volcanoes' basements also allows for the production of nearly 15% of the country's electricity through five geothermal power plants.
