ECOLODGE LOS COFÁN
Read moreThis tourism project was put in place by Fundación para la Sobrevivencia del Pueblo Cofán (Foundation for the Survival of the Cofán People). Tourism is not the primary objective of this NGO, but it carries out circuits on demand. The Cofán community is one of the oldest cultures in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
With a territory of over 10 000 ha of virgin forest, the Locale Locale local community, near the Aguario River, strives to protect its natural resources. The tourist activity takes place mainly in Zabalo, a Cofán community located in the Faunistique Réserve reserve. The camp was built with local materials.
Proposed activities. Excursions in the forest, discovery of local fauna and flora, canoeing tours.
Minimizing impact. The foundation for the survival of the Cofán people aims to protect the nature and living environment of the population, so all activities are respectful of the environment. The number of participants in turn is limited to 15 persons.
Local population. All people who work in this tourism project are indigenous Cofán; so the benefits go directly to the community.
ECOLODGE KAWAPI

It can accommodate up to 50 people in 20 double or triple rooms. The 22 palm roof huts are organized around a lagoon in the forest. Meals are a mixture of international and Ecuadorian cuisine.
The lodge is exemplary in eco-tourism. Reception and activities must have a minimum environmental impact and through this project, all waste recycling systems and the preservation of ecological zones are implemented.
Proposed activities. Multiple activities are proposed: visit of the communities, guided walks in the forest, observations of birds and caïmans, navigation in canoe.
Conservation - Education. This 5 000 km 2 reserve preserves the rain rainforest and its many inhabitants.
Minimizing the impact
The lodge was built on stilts to limit the impact of constructions on flora. Tap water is completely purified by sand filtration and UV treatment. Electricity is supplied through a hybrid solar energy system and a diesel generator. The 64 solar panels cover 80% of the lodge's energy needs. The lodge is not illuminated during the night to change the behaviour of nocturnal fauna.
Local population. The Kapawi project was initiated in 1993 in partnership with the FINAE (Federation of Indigenous People's Federation of Ecuador). In 2011, the entire tourist activity will be delegated to the Achuar people. A shop sells crafts produced by the community.
ECOLODGE SANTA LUCIA
Read moreSanta Lucia is a community project located in a reserve of almost virgin 730 ha forest between 1 400 m and 2 600 m altitude. This altitude difference makes Santa Lucia the refuge of many bird species. The project is supported by the Ecuadorian Ecotourism Association and Rainforest Alliance. An has a capacity of 20 people, and food is prepared based on local products (organic vegetables, natural brown sugar and organic coffee).
Santa Lucia has three main objectives: conserve and protect the cloud forest belonging to the family members of the organization; develop sustainable sources of income for the members of Santa Lucia and bring direct or indirect benefits to residents of neighbouring areas.
Proposed activities. Hiking, visits to local communities, visit of the tree infirmary. Visits are organized for up to 6 people with a local guide.
Minimizing impact. Organic waste is directed in a compost field to use it in the same garden. Inorganic waste is predominantly recycled.
Conservation - Education. The organization of Santa Lucia organizes environmental education programmes in the main school with over 200 children to teach them the importance of conserving natural resources.
Local population. All people who work in tourism are in the sector.
In order to promote community development, the structure purchases local products, for example: organic vegetables, natural brown sugar and organic coffee developed in the sector.
HUAORANI ECOLODGE
Read moreOf all indigenous peoples of Ecuador, the Huaoranis are the least affected by external influences. They had contact with the missionaries only from 1956 onwards. Currently, their territory is threatened by oil exploitation with numerous surveys. The Huaorani people have 2 700 individuals left in a territory of 680 000 ha.
Located along the river Shiripuno 45 min from the village, the camp is managed by the Communauté'ono community. The lodge, built with local woods, is in total harmony with nature and can accommodate up to 10 people in 5 rooms.
Proposed activities. Forest excursions, discovery of local fauna and flora, waterfalls visits. Guides guides always accompany visitors.
Minimizing impact. Using biodegradable products for daily cleaning, lighting is made from solar energy which also feeds the refrigerator and the water pump. Recyclable and harmless waste is treated in advance in a biological filter before being discharged into the river. The lodge provides soap visitors and biodegradable shampoo.
Local population. Tourism money is paid to the president of the community who distributes it equitably to the members. The construction of a laundry is in project to increase the number of jobs.
SANILODGE
Read moreSani Lodge is an ecological complex wholly owned by the Quechua community of Sani Isla located in the province of Sucumbios and Orellana in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Sani Lodge is built on a land of over 37 000 ha on the Challuacocha lagoon and offers rich animal and plant biodiversity. It lies between 2 of the world's various ecological reserves, the Yasuni National Park and the Cuyabeno Reserve.
The maximum capacity of the lodge is 30 persons: 10 cabins each with a double bed and a single bed plus a camping area for up to 16 people.
The huts are located on the edge of a black water lagoon. Each cabin was built in a typical way with a straw roof and has a private bathroom and electric light.
Proposed activities. Morning walks, canoeing walks in the lagoon, fishing for piranhas, night rides in canoeing in search of hosts, night hikes.
During the excursions, groups are divided in 6, and each group is accompanied by a native guide of the region and a bilingual naturalist guide.
A trail network provides easy access to different ecosystems such as the wetlands of the Tierra Firm or the forest. Guided tours of Yasuni National Park and exploration on both sides of the Napo River.
Conservation - Education. More than 550 bird species, including the famous Rufous Potoo, have been identified on the site. Sani Lodge has many populations of animals currently in danger of extinction, such as the Black kings or Chorongo monkey.
Minimizing impact. Electric energy is obtained through solar panels. Biodegradable organic waste is processed into manure at the hotel. Other waste (plastic, glass, cardboard) is brought to the municipal landfill of Coke.
The local population. The lodge is owned and managed by the Quechua community. 20 people from the local community work at Sani Lodge. Only the administrator and naturalist guides do not belong to the local community. The revenues generated by the lodge are fully reinvested in various projects to improve the areas of education (construction of an indigenous lyceum) or health.
